Nathalie Balcaen is head of the Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services, part of the Flemish government, which counts 1191 employees.
The main responsibilities of the agency are:
-
to protect the Flemish population against storm surge and flooding. A Masterplan for Coastal Safety is implemented taking into account climate change and sea level rise.
-
to ensure safe and efficient shipping to and from the ports in Flanders and Zeeland in The Netherlands. Pilots go on board of commercial vessels and ships are being monitored and directed from ashore to the ports.
-
to organize water-bound passenger mobility at various locations in Flanders. Transport by water is becoming an important alternative to the car on strategic traffic arteries, both for recreational trips and commuting.
Nathalie Balcaen is also the Flemish chairman of the Belgian Coast Guard, which is responsible for the cooperation between all governmental partners authorized for the North Sea.
Reliable services, innovation, expertise and cooperation make the Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services the ultimate maritime government partner.
