POLITICAL CAREER

Starting out his professional career as a lawyer and solicitor, Geert Bourgeois first acceded to politics in 1977, after having spent more than ten years at the service of the ‘Vlaamse Beweging’ (Flemish movement). He was first elected local councillor for the Volksunie party in Izegem before moving on to become alderman in this town. In 1995, he entered the Belgian House of Representatives, where he distinguished himself as a legal specialist.

In 2000 he came at the helm of the Volksunie. After the break-up of this party, he founded the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA) in 2001 and became the party’s first leader.

Geert Bourgeois is Minister-President of the Government of Flanders, in which he is also competent for foreign policy and immovable heritage.

Geert Bourgeois has been a minister in the Government of Flanders since 2004. Over the years, his portfolio has included local and provincial government, public governance, foreign policy, civic integration, media, tourism, immovable heritage and the ‘Vlaamse Rand’ (ring of Flemish municipalities around the capital Brussels). In 2009, he became Vice-Minister-President. He has been Minister-president of the Government of Flanders since 2014.
